Shaista Kazmi
President, Apna Ghar
Shaista is an absolute powerhouse, y’all. She is not only the caregiver to her father and mother-in-law, but she co-founded Apna Ghar, a home care agency that specializes in in-home care for Detroit’s South Asian, Muslim, and immigrant community. She was inspired to found Apna Ghar due to the isolation and challenges she faced looking for the right kind of care for her father.
The CARE Fellowship is founded and will operate from the notion that family caregivers are experts in our own lives and struggles and, to that end, should speak for ourselves about both the individual challenges we face as well as the systemic solutions to those challenges. In order to do that, we think it’s pertinent to invest the time and resources into training people in why caregiving is so undervalued in the United States, how the work we will accomplish as this cohort forwards Caring Across Generations’ strategic plan, and building up everyone’s storytelling and communications chops to utilize representing Caring Across and, ideally, in other work you are a part of as well!
